I Thessalonians 2:9-13 Matthew 23:1-12
Our gracious eternal God, we have need to pray this day.
We have so much internal confusion and noise and chatter going on all the time.
We find ourselves distracted from the good and living the evil.
We nurture slights and become preoccupied with how ill-willed others often are.
We hold onto old wrongs which feel like weights on our souls, yet we are reluctant to relinquish them and look for a new start.
We worry about tomorrow and wonder if you will go before us.
We draw erroneous conclusions from others’ behaviour which are based only on our faulty perceptions.
And too often we are insistent on our own way.
God, be with us on our journey and walk with us through these internal wars which are so much with us.
Help us to know that it is our own souls which need re-working.
Help us to know that it is we who are in need of redemption and reconciliation.
Help us to know that it is we who are in the need of prayer.
Help us to try new and more generous behaviours which are filled with love and good will.
O God, transform us and change our defeatist attitudes. Instead of asking for life to be all smooth sailing give us the courage for challenges. Instead of cowering before difficulty give us the strength to embrace it and to overcome. Lead us to be a people of victory, of faith in the future, and of the attitude that with your aid we can overcome the world. Amen
