Genesis 1:1-2:4a
Psalm 8
2 Corinthians 13:11-13
Matthew 28:16-20
O Eternal One, the biblical descriptions of your majestic creative work in calling this world into being create in us a sense of reverence, awe, and great mystery. The ancient people’s journey from understanding you as a tribal, territorial, limited deity to understanding you as the creative God of all the universe was punctuated with much suffering, struggle, questioning, anxiety, and then finally a larger vision. By the waters of Babylon the prophet challenged his people for their small and limited vision of God:
“Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God, the
creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint,
and strengthens the powerless.” Is. 40:28
It is almost beyond our comprehension that you, the Creator of all, should also care for each of us in times when our power is faint. Yet we find comfort in those words of Isaiah “…that we shall run and not be weary, we shall walk but not faint.” Help us to trust and save us from those times when our concept of you is too small.
May we bow before the mystery of your creative power.
May we never fail to see the beauty of your creation because we pass through life hurriedly.
May we, having seen glimpses of the vastness of space which were denied to the ancient folk, never fail to have a sense of wonder and awe and appreciation for your creative handiwork.
May we always stop to consider the “lilies of the field” and the glory and beauty of creation.
May we also be good caretakers of the environment of nature which we have inherited. Amen
