Day of Pentecost
June 8, 2025
Acts 2:1-21 or Genesis 11:1-9
Psalm 104:24-34, 35b
Romans 8:14-17 or Acts 2:1-21
John 14:8-17, (25-27)

Our gracious, mysterious God, God of the wind, God of the Spirit, God of mystery, continue to invade our spirits with your powerful spirit.  For in that one long ago powerful Pentecost moment, that unscrambling of the confusion of languages, all who were present were able to comprehend and understand.

However you come, whether in the wind, or whether in the silence, we need your help, O God.  Bring to us and our world Pentecost moments when the myriad peoples of the earth, representing differing cultures and languages, hear one another with clarity and understanding and unity.  For even using one common language we so frequently fail to understand.  We confuse one another not so much with nuances of language but with nuances of deception and intention.  We use words in our culture to spin stories to our ends, to hide and conceal the truth, to impose our truth on others.  We refuse to listen to the truth of others and we forget your promise that the truth will set us free.  Save us.  Bring us Pentecost moments.
We bring before you those whose lives are punctuated with stress, dread, and terror.

Be with those who are held hostage in the struggle in the Middle East.
Be with their families who think the worst.
Be with those in prison there.
Be with those in our armed forces whose lives are constantly in danger.
Be with our enemies who are so consumed with hatred and save us from succumbing to hatred.

To them and to us bring Pentecost moments so that one day we might all comprehend and understand completely and know the unity of the spirit.  Amen
