Day of Pentecost
May 28, 2023
Acts 2:1-21 or Numbers 11:24-30
Psalm 104:24-34, 35b
I Cor. 12:3b-13
John 20:19-23 or John 7:37-39
O gentle Spirit, on this Pentecost Sunday we ask that you woo us once again from the falseness of our human foolishness.
Woo us from our tendency to build walls between our sisters and brothers and bring us unity of heart and understanding like that first Pentecost day.
Woo us from the divisiveness and confusion of all that is symbolized by Babylon and lead us to receive and to understand others’ truths.
Woo us from ever thinking that war can ever be a real solution to the differences of the world.
Woo us to wish for, and to work for, peace and justice among all of your peoples.
Woo us as nations to correct the injustices which lead to such a clearly defined map in our world where poverty and terrorism live hand in hand.
We are grateful, O God, for those who have gone before us and carried the tradition of the Spirit forward: for those who have been able to dream distant dreams; for those whose visions can always see light however much darkness there seems to be; for those who teach us that life always leans forward and that to clutch too closely to the past is always a destructive posture.
On this great Pentecost day renew our spirits. If any be walking through dark valleys point them to the mountaintops. If any be facing difficulty grant them strength, certainty, and your gentle presence. If any be facing transitions lead them firmly forward.
Be with the physically needy. Comfort the grieving, especially in those moments of intense emptiness when life seems as if it will never have quality again. Bless our world and bring hope to those in danger. Amen
