Proper 22 (27)
October 8, 2023
Exodus 20:1-4, 7-9, 12-20 Psalm 19 or Isaiah 5:1-7
Psalm 80:7-15
Philippians 3:4b-14
Matthew 21:33-46
Eternal God, we thank you for this week which has presented us with a panorama of exploding autumn colors. We thank you that you have so painted this world with colors that our eyes almost catch a glow from the brilliance.
We pause on this world-wide communion day, aware of the millions of our sisters and brothers with whom we are united at the table of Jesus Christ. Unite us also in a commitment to service. Bless your people wherever they gather this day in your name. Create unity, love, and Christian witness in each place.
In this great land of so much abundance there are still so many people with great need. In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina people are uprooted, families are separated, a city has been rendered unfit in which to live, other cities and villages have been destroyed. May your church be moved with compassion for all of these “Neighbours in Need.”
May we who have been spared give generously.
May we have the vision to give to help the hungry.
May we have the vision to give to provide an opportunity for a child.
May we have the vision to give in order to alleviate suffering among the elderly.
May we have the vision to give to open some doors for those who need opportunity.
May we have the vision to do all we can to help people rebuild their lives.
May we join St. Paul in “forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,” pressing “on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call in Christ Jesus.” Amen
