Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15 or Amos 6:1a, 4-7
Psalm 91:1-6, 14-16 or Psalm 146
1 Timothy 6:6-19
Luke 16:19-31

Our gracious, eternal God, we bow today with humility and a little bit of fear.  We thank you that you do not wish us to cower before you in fear, however, but to remind us that our actions and decisions carry with them a sense of accountability and they bear lasting effects.  The world has many rich men but it has many more  people like Lazarus.  The age old saga of neglect and poverty go on and on from century to century.

Help us to learn the lesson Jesus taught so long ago.
Help us to realize that we cannot live life indifferently from those who suffer.
Help us to realize that each of us is bound to all others.
Help us to realize that to whom much is given much is also required.
Help us to realize that the resources we have been given are not for our exclusive use and enjoyment but are meant to be utilized in your service and for the needy.
Help us to realize that we are called to step forth and place our resources and our influence upon the side of justice for all people.
Help us to realize, O God, that we are accountable to you for our life’s performance.

Transform our attitudes toward money with which we all struggle.  Transform us from a stingy and calculating posture to one of generosity.  Transform us from insensitivity and a sense of powerlessness about poverty to people who care.  Impress upon us that we who have so much can bring relief to those who hunger and suffer.  Impress upon us that we are our sisters’ and our brothers’ keeper. Amen
